Edgecore Networks Partners with Exaware and FONEX to Deliver an Open Multi-Service OLT Access Router Using Tibit Transceivers

Edgecore Networks Partners with Exaware and FONEX to Deliver an Open Multi-Service OLT Access Router Using Tibit Transceivers

Edgecore Networks, a leading provider of traditional and open network solutions for enterprises, data centers, and telecommunication service providers, announced a new partnership with Exaware and FONEX Data Systems, Inc. to provide Optical Line Terminal (OLT) access routers to communications service providers (CSP) using transceivers from Tibit Communications.

By using a pluggable Tibit transceiver to provide networking services in fiber-to-the-curb (FTTx) applications, CSPs reduce infrastructure costs by as much as half that of traditional equipment.

“Open networking solutions enable carriers to rapidly build new capacity,” said Nanda Ravindan, VP of Product Management, Edgecore Networks. “As the first hardware vendor to contribute open platforms to the Telecom Infra Project (TIP), Edgecore Networks is enabling carriers to reduce the cost of network deployment while moving toward a more consistent and open infrastructure across the network.”

Open networking solutions have been increasingly popular in CSP networks since 2016 when the Broadcom DNX family of chipsets was released.

“Exaware’s unique multi-service access solution, including onboard device support for native Tibit MicroPlug SFP+ OLT pluggables and software environment, offers CSPs a simple alternative to using traditional fixed chassis-based OLT and switch router devices at the access and edge locations of the network,” said Reinhard Florin, VP of Global Sales & Marketing, Exaware. “Exaware’s network operating system, ExaNOS, is a carrier grade networking software that runs on any Broadcom DNX-based hardware. The combined Exaware, Edgecore, and Tibit solution collapses carrier grade IP/MPLS routing, switching, and OLT functionality into a single, hardened 1 rack unit (RU) device that is extremely scalable and cost effective.”

The longstanding systems integration expertise of FONEX will enable carriers to implement a cost-saving solution for multi-service access routers at all points of the network.

“FONEX is thrilled to partner with Exaware and Edgecore, and to keep advancing the adoption of open 10G PON solutions,” said Pasquale Ricciardi, CTO, FONEX. “We strongly believe in the future of open networking, and we recognize that successful partnerships are key to making open access networking more powerful, efficient, and accessible.”

The Tibit transceiver integrates the OLT functionality of a single passive optical network (PON) fiber into an SFP+ form factor that can be plugged into a router or switch SFP+ socket. The Tibit pluggable transceiver can be easily integrated into a carrier grade Ethernet switch. Unlike the closed and proprietary approaches of traditional OLT vendors, Tibit’s open OLT technology enables rapid PON deployment in any environment.
