CIO Influence Interview with Ryan Worobel, Chief Information Officer at LogicMonitor

“AIOps platforms apply machine learning and data science to help solve ITOps problems and increase proficiency.”

Please share a little bit about your role and responsibilities at LogicMonitor?

At a high-level, my role as CIO really focuses on all things related to running the business: corporate applications, networks, core infrastructure, and data centers. But at its core my role encompasses driving successful large-scale business transformation, business digitization, and strategic technology programs for LogicMonitor while also ensuring that all of our IT is running smoothly. As a business, we are focused on helping CIOs, so my work feels very close to LogicMonitor’s overall mission.

CIOs are increasingly looking at real-time solutions to build their IT infrastructure. Could you please tell us how LogicMonitor fits into a CIO’s roadmap?

During the pandemic we moved from the corporate office to our home offices, our kitchen tables or anywhere we could conduct our business from the comfort of our homes. In the same vein and at the same time, organizations accelerated moving from traditional, on-premise solutions to the cloud – a journey that continues today.

During this journey, it’s easy for things to go awry. Think of it like getting on a boat – when you have one foot on the dock and one foot already in the boat, the boat gets rocky and you’re grasping thin air to avoid falling in the water. That’s where LogicMonitor comes in – we help make sure you stay dry as you journey from land to sea; on-premise to the cloud.

It’s so important for businesses to make sure their infrastructure stays up and running, knowing exactly what tools and services are up and down and how to fix them should a problem arise – whenever, wherever. It’s essential for enterprises to achieve end-to-end IT observability so they can reduce outages and downtime and optimize their customer experience while simultaneously delivering transformational business outcomes, which is what we aim to do.

What are CIO’s options when it comes to identifying key features of Infrastructure Monitoring?

There are a lot of systems out there to choose from, but it’s important to evaluate what you’re looking for, specific to your business, and with intention. Technology, architecture and functionality are all anchored within the heart of the business. If your current system isn’t supporting your business needs – it can become a liability.

Things to consider include cost, modernization, business needs specific to your industry, etc. At the end of the day any monitoring system should help organizations spend less time troubleshooting and more time innovating – so if your system isn’t doing that, it’s time to look for a new one.

How do Virtual Machine Monitoring and AIOps enhance IT visibility?

ITOps teams are under nonstop pressure to work faster and deliver better results – and it’s not easy. AIOps platforms apply machine learning and data science to help solve ITOps problems and increase proficiency. From there, you’re able to ingest data from multiple sources, perform real-time analysis at the point of ingestion and initiate an action or next step based on the insights you gather.

Modern monitoring platforms do offer visibility – but visibility alone is no longer enough. IT operations need intelligent monitoring platforms that can cut through the noise to quickly surface information that lets them minimize downtime and maximize performance. By adding AIOps, monitoring platforms can provide the intelligence needed to help IT operations succeed faster.

You are known for continuous innovation of observability solutions that contextualize data and help companies solve mission critical problems. How do you use data science to build this infrastructure for your customers?

We are in an interesting position where we collect 600 billion data points per day across two million active devices, and as you collect this data, you can start to see patterns. Data science is critical in identifying these patterns through complex analysis and machine learning techniques, and we can use these patterns to spot correlations between events and help track down root causes – and even help with causation. These patterns can also be used to better predict future events.

What is your advice to every CIOs about how to optimize their remote monitoring?

Remote monitoring has been around for longer than many may think, but it wasn’t something all organizations needed to do previously. But enter the pandemic, and companies were forced to roll down the blinds and close their doors. When remote IT management became a requirement, not a request, CIOs came around to the idea.

Before the pandemic, the prospect of letting another organization manage your company’s IT infrastructure, seemed unreasonable or dangerous – like handing house keys to a stranger. But now the C-suite discovered what IT leaders had known for years: remote monitoring is safe, less expensive and just as or more effective than  in-house management.

Experts predict that the market for remote monitoring will reach $54.5B by 2027. The tech will only become smarter, there will be more services available and potentially trickle down into the SMB space. My advice for CIOs is to keep innovating, listening to your customers and following the market. The future for remote monitoring looks bright and provides busy teams with benefits they probably wouldn’t find elsewhere.
