New Open Source Wireless GPS/GNSS Hardware for IoT and Autonomous Applications

New Open Source Wireless GPS/GNSS Hardware for IoT and Autonomous Applications
mowi, is an open-source reference design for Septentrioโ€™s highly accurate GNSS module, mosaic. It offers Wi-Fi and Bluetooth communication which can easily be programmed for custom applications.

Septentrio, a leader in high-precision GNSS positioning solutions, announces an important addition to the open-source resources for their GPS/GNSS module receivers: mosaicTM wireless or simply mowi.ย Itย combinesย the Septentrio mosaic-X5ย or mosaic-Hย module receiver withย aย dual-modeย Bluetooth andย integratedย Wi-Fiย fromย the well-knownย ESP32- WRover programmable moduleย byย Espressif Systems.ย Itย is an addition toย theย already existingย mosaicHATย board,ย designed onย theย Raspberryย Piย platform.

โ€œWe are excited about the mowi project being part of the GitHubย and prototypingย community. The project is available as open-source, thus empowering the community to easily fit autonomous or robotic systems withย communication andย highly accurate and reliable GNSS positioning technology.ย mowi empowers the native ethernet features of the mosaic module.ย The perfect tool forย fastย prototyping and developing proof-of-conceptย projectsย in a simple and connected way,โ€ย notes Gustavo Lopez, Market Access Manager at Septentrio.ย Theย mowiย project facilitates accurate and reliable GNSS positioning forย robotic andย autonomous devices,ย on a hardware level. Numerous engineers todayย useย the ESP32ย and the multiple libraries availableย forย Internet-of-Thingsย (IoT)ย prototyping. Theย mowiย board is an easy way forย integrators to get started withย Septentrioโ€™s mosaic-X5ย or mosaic-Hย headingย moduleย receivers.ย The mowiย boardย can be used on its own or plugged intoย a mobile computer such as Raspberry Pi or Arduino to deliverย high-accuracy positioning with high update rates, ideal for machine navigation,ย monitoring orย control.ย Theย internet connection viaย Wi-Fiย or Bluetoothย enablesย numerousย industrial IoT applications,ย simplifyingย theย connectivity to mobile dataย forย theย delivery of GNSS correctionsย neededย forย cm-levelย RTKย positioning.

On top of the wireless communication, theย smallย 47.5×70ย mmย boardย canย host IoTย applicationsย in its internal memory. Itย has onboard logging andย exposesย interfaces such as USB, serialย communication, and general-purpose pins. Theย schematicโ€™sย reference design,ย PCB layoutย and documentation areย openlyย available forย prototypingย or further customization.

Theย mowiย open-source projectย isย availableย to the communityย on theย Septentrio GitHub repository. For more informationย on Septentrio’s industry-leading GNSS receivers, please visitย septentrio.com.
