It has slowly but surely evolved into an indispensable tool that is here to stay. It’s a silent guardian, a watchful protector, promising unprecedented capabilities in threat detection, surveillance, and fraud prevention. But, this guardian holds a double-edged sword: the AI-security paradox.

As AI becomes our shield, it also casts a shadow, raising significant and valid concerns. Its influence is particularly profound in the realm of security, where it promises unprecedented capabilities in threat detection, surveillance, and fraud prevention.

There is also the sensitive issue of privacy.

How much information is really out there on each of us?

And, how much of that info is stored unsecured and ready to be devoured by an AI and utilized with little to no transparency? What happens if bad actors get access to that data?

The Power of AI in Enhancing Security

Imagine a guardian that never sleeps, tirelessly analyzing data to protect us. That’s AI in the realm of security. It’s a game-changer, revolutionizing the field with predictive analytics that foresees cyber threats, surveillance systems that watch over public spaces, and fraud detection mechanisms that safeguard our finances. But this guardian’s power should not eclipse the right to privacy.

As we welcome AI’s protective embrace, we must also ensure that our privacy remains inviolate.

AI-augmented security systems can use technologies such as facial recognition and object detection to monitor public spaces. This already enhances safety by identifying potential threats and handing over the decision-making to a human operator.

Imagine some luggage being left unattended at an airport. An AI would immediately, in real-time, be able to see the passenger walking away and alert security to the position of the luggage, and then track the passenger as they move throughout the airport. By analyzing transaction patterns and user behavior, it can identify patterns impossible for humans to detect. Who can honestly answer how the various AIs out there today gather data and how it then analyzes, interprets, and draws conclusions from that data? I’m willing to bet that only a handful of people on the planet are able to do that. Take that example of tracking luggage at an airport. What if you expand that? What if you no longer track movements in a building but across a whole city? It’s easy to imagine nefarious organizations or government agencies using this to track individuals, right? But it might as well be an upset CCTV operator telling the system to track their ex. There are no proper systems in place today apart from the ones implemented by the companies running these systems.

Data mining techniques are another example where AI can excel in gathering massive amounts of data on an individual and then drawing conclusions from that.

It’s understandable that the EU is already drafting regulations around this. Remember, now. EU is a legislative superpower. The only reason why you have to click on those cookie consent pop-ups on every single page you go to is that the EU implemented the GDPR regulations over the privacy concerns they had on how cookies can track users’ behaviors online without them consenting to this. Those same legislators are now seeing a new technology emerge that far surpasses anything they had imagined when it comes to privacy concerns.

Things will change, my friends. We are in the naïve youth of AI’s emergence. Ten years from now, we will look back at this as a simpler time.

Striking the Balance

So, how do we strike a balance between having an all-powerful guardian constantly watching over us while also maintaining control over our privacy? It’s a delicate dance, requiring robust privacy safeguards and regulations. Privacy should be woven into the fabric of AI design, and data anonymization techniques can protect individual privacy. Most people would agree that transparency in AI operations is crucial. And multiple stakeholders are playing a role in this game, with governments, tech companies, and the public all having a role to play.

Let’s be frank here; a business will only do something if it benefits its bottom line or if it is forced on them. That is not necessarily wrong. It just means they are one side of a coin, with the government on the other side. Both of those sides have their own interest, but it is an interest in the same thing; the public. Companies want to sell to it, while the governments want to, for the most part, protect it.

It’s no coincidence that Microsoft was hounded by the government back in the 90’s over anti-trust accusations but not so much anymore. Back then, Microsoft was a mainly consumer-oriented company. Pretty much everything they did ended up on a headline. These days that has changed. Microsoft, even though they still have consumer products, is a B2B company, with over 80% of its revenue being generated from B2B business segments. This has been a conscious strategy. Microsoft was on the verge of being forcibly broken up like Rockefeller’s standard oil was back in the day. Now that they mainly sell to companies, the government is no longer as concerned with them. The government doesn’t really care about protecting companies. They are even, to some extent, prohibited from doing so. But protecting the public is something different altogether.

Due to this, there will be much effort spent from the governmental side on not only monitoring AI but also, over time, regulating it. As is often the case, the EU to taking the lead on this, with other jurisdictions following suit. What they are looking for right now are strategies for mitigating risk, such as privacy by design, data anonymization etc.
