Kleiner Perkins-led round will be used to expand development and go-to-market activities for PlanetScale’s new enterprise platform, built on open source Vitess
PlanetScale, the serverless database powered by MySQL and Vitess, announced that it has secured $50M in funding in a round led by Kleiner Perkins with participation from existing investors a16z, SignalFire and Insight Partners, as well as Tom Preston Werner (co-founder and CEO of GitHub), Jack Altman (CEO and founder of lattice), and Max Mellen (co-founder of Instacart). Kleiner Perkins Partner Bucky Moore will join the PlanetScale Board of Directors. The Series C round brings the total capital raised by PlanetScale to $105 million. PlanetScale plans to use the funding to accelerate research and development and expand go-to-market activities globally for the company’s infinitely scalable and easy-to-use serverless MySQL database.
“The traction we have gained with some of the world’s leading brands since we entered beta in May will only be accelerated by this funding and by the general availability of our platform, also announced today. We can’t wait to see what our users will build with PlanetScale.”
“The next-generation of infrastructure leaders will be developer-led, and built entirely for the cloud,” said Bucky Moore, partner, Kleiner Perkins. “PlanetScale’s product embodies this future with its state-of-the-art user experience and unparalleled scalability. We are honored to partner with Sam, Jiten, Sugu and the immensely talented team they have assembled to continue pushing the boundaries of what developers should expect from a modern database service.”

Customers of PlanetScale include, GitHub, New Relic, Slack, MyFitnessPal, Square, Affirm and Community.com. PlanetScale currently serves 100s million queries a day across thousands of databases. The newest version of the platform, also announced today, builds on other industry-first capabilities including database branching and sharding and the first-of-its-kind PlanetScale Managed Cloud, which allows companies to utilize their developer experience within their own cloud instance.
PlanetScale is built atop Vitess, the peerlessly-powerful open source database that underlies YouTube, Slack, Square and Airbnb. PlanetScale is a developer-first database requiring no knowledge or selection of all the usual cloud zones, cluster sizes, and other database-centric details that others require and that increase complexity for developers. PlanetScale accelerates companies’ success by being both the best choice for developers on day one, when they create their company, and the most scalable choice when they hit hyperscale.
“The database industry has never been more ready for a complete revolution, and PlanetScale, with the support of our investors, is completely prepared to lead it,” said PlanetScale CEO Sam Lambert. “The traction we have gained with some of the world’s leading brands since we entered beta in May will only be accelerated by this funding and by the general availability of our platform, also announced today. We can’t wait to see what our users will build with PlanetScale.”
