Haywire Brings Next-Level Internet and Managed Wi-Fi to Purdue’s Discovery Park, Multifamily Developers

The managed Wi-Fi provider is closing in on 1,000 residential end-users

Haywire, an FTTU (fiber-to-the-unit) Internet service provider supplying fiber Internet and managed Wi-Fi, is bringing its proven technology to multifamily developers and tenants, including Purdue University’s Discovery Park. Haywire supplies managed Wi-Fi through pre-installed fiber-optic equipment to have new customers online in seconds without the hassle of installation appointments or interacting with technicians.

“By incorporating innovative technology into our managed Wi-Fi solution, we make sure customers don’t have to think about their Internet. It’s always there. It’s always on. We do the hard part behind the scenes so it always just works.”

Haywire was founded by Kelly Pfledderer, founder and former CEO of Indianapolis-based Apparatus. During his time with Apparatus, the company provided enterprise cloud and Internet infrastructure for Fortune 500s and startups alike and was acquired by Virtusa in 2015. Pfledderer’s deep knowledge of enterprise networking and infrastructure management is now being translated to residential communities.

“The majority of customers don’t want to get into the technical aspects of their Internet service. They just want to connect and go,” said Pfledderer. “By incorporating innovative technology into our managed Wi-Fi solution, we make sure customers don’t have to think about their Internet. It’s always there. It’s always on. We do the hard part behind the scenes so it always just works.”

The company’s first residential customer signed on in 2020, and momentum has only continued as Haywire is situated to cross the 1,000-customer milestone this fall, entering into its next season of growth. Additionally, Haywire partnered with Discovery Park, a $1 billion mixed-use development of housing, high-end manufacturing, and industry and research-driven partnerships across more than 400 acres of Purdue’s campus, and serves as an Internet service provider for the district’s apartments, townhomes, residential homes and commercial spaces.

Among Haywire’s multifamily property customers is Old Town Companies, a Central Indiana-based land development, construction and real estate investment company.

“Our experience with Haywire has been exemplary,” said Brad Richey, Senior Vice President and Director of Multifamily for Old Town Companies. “They have provided top-notch service and have truly worked with us as a ‘partner’ in the services we provide to our residents. The staff and commercial tenants have raved about the experience. From installation to support and services provided to our residents, we couldn’t be happier.”

Integrating Internet hardware into building infrastructure provides a new and incredibly efficient way to deliver Internet services in a dense multifamily environment. Apartments are instantly ready for new tenants without the need to change out hardware or charge customer installation fees—and new customers can receive their Wi-Fi credentials before they even move in. This customer experience is a welcomed change and a competitive advantage for developers and owners.

“Managed Wi-Fi gives each tenant their own router and a private Internet connection that is monitored 24/7 by cloud controllers to ensure uptime and speed,” said Pfledderer. “Managed Wi-Fi is not the same as community or public Wi-Fi. All management and support of the network is done remotely, behind the scenes, resulting in a customer experience of lightning-fast, always-available Internet.”

Whether working, playing or studying from home, today’s data-intensive applications thrive with a modern Internet system like the option offered by Haywire. Installing outdated phone and cable networks instead of fiber in new builds will require expensive and complicated future upgrades, as these old technologies are unable to supply the bandwidth necessary for the increasing demands of residents.

Managed Wi-Fi is the future of high-speed connectivity, and Haywire is ensuring multifamily developers are at the forefront of next-gen connectivity.
