“Our infrastructure in Canada has given our customers the power to transform the way businesses, educational institutions, and government agencies serve their stakeholders. With an additional AWS Region in Canada, customers will experience even lower latency for future solutions such as 5G-enabled applications and machine learning at the edge, and it will strengthen their ability to shape their regional infrastructure for even greater fault tolerance, resilience and availability ” said Prasad Kalyanaraman, vice president of infrastructure services at AWS. “We look forward to creating world-class infrastructure to help companies reinvent the way they deliver customer solutions and drive economic growth.”

“This major investment by AWS shows yet again that Alberta will establish itself as a leader in digital technology and innovation. This multi-billion dollar data center project in our province illustrates the work Invest Alberta is doing to create jobs and diversify the economy, ”said Alberta’s Prime Minister Jason Kenney. “I look forward to working with AWS on this project and seeing how it will strengthen the IT and communications sector in Alberta.”

AWS Regions are made up of availability zones that house the infrastructure in separate and distinct geographic locations. The availability zones are far enough apart to ensure customer business continuity, but close enough to provide low latency for high availability applications that use multiple availability zones. Each availability zone has independent power, cooling, and physical security. The zones are connected to one another via redundant networks with ultra-low latency. AWS customers, for whom high availability is a top priority, can develop their applications to operate them in different availability zones and thus achieve even greater resilience.
