Collaboration and Microsoft sponsorship includes global mirror network for rapid deployment
The AlmaLinux OS Foundation, the non-profit overseeing the only community-owned and community-driven open source enterprise-grade alternative to CentOS, announced that AlmaLinux virtual machine images are now available for Microsoft Azure users on the Azure Marketplace. In addition, Microsoft is sponsoring AlmaLinux and the establishment of a global mirror network to make AlmaLinux readily available to its Azure users worldwide.

“We are grateful to Microsoft for the generous support making AlmaLinux ubiquitous for Azure users around the world,” said Jack Aboutboul, community manager of AlmaLinux. “It’s vital to the CentOS community to have a truly community-owned and community-driven open source enterprise-grade alternative available in the cloud and Microsoft’s support helps make that possible and with a great user experience.”
As part of this collaboration, the AlmaLinux OS Foundation will maintain, support and update AlmaLinux OS images on Azure. AlmaLinux will operate a global network of mirrors on infrastructure provided by Microsoft to ensure quick delivery of general and security updates and speedy software package installation, as well as information on migration for current CentOS users. AlmaLinux and Microsoft will also work together to provide additional information, documentation and educational resources for Azure users transitioning to, or running, their workloads on AlmaLinux.

“For well over a decade, Microsoft has been investing in Linux,” said Jim Perrin, principal program manager, Linux Systems Group, Microsoft. “With collaborations being a central pillar of the Microsoft open source strategy, we collaborate with AlmaLinux’s and the broader AlmaLinux’s ecosystem to ensure customers have an increasing set of options to deploy Linux workloads on Azure in a supported, managed and secure way.”
AlmaLinux’s OS has gained wide acceptance worldwide since becoming generally available over four months ago.
- Tens of thousands of downloads from its primary mirror site, plus an undetermined number from 133 other mirror sites around the world.
- Over 70,000 pulls of AlmaLinux’s on Docker Hub
- Nearly 1,400 Vagrant boxes deployed
- Nearly 200 GitHub stars for the AlmaLinux’s migration script
- Contributions from people all over the world
