CIOs or security teams should have AI training programs put in place and implement company policies and processes. Like how people are trained on topics like phishing and ransomware, employees, partners, and stakeholders will need training in AI operations, associated risks within the enterprise, prudent usage, and potential benefits or risks to the enterprise. This training must be effective and accompanied by good AI policies and processes that are in place for the slow integration of AI into the enterprise. AI can cause as much, if not more, disruption as the traditional phishing attacks enterprises have experienced in the last five to ten years.

#2 Implementing Sandboxing Measures for Public LLMs

Enterprise CISOs should consider sandboxing public LLMs as the second active step in enhancing security measures. I recently spoke to a CISO who created a sandbox environment for seven public LLMs. This allowed the network users to draw on public LLMs’ insights without returning local knowledge to the public space. In this sandbox, prompts can be answered, but the data requested in the prompts remains within the internal network and not sent to OpenAI or other AI developers. Or, of course, the ability to download open-source LLMs for on-premise use can achieve the same result of keeping the possibly proprietary information within an internal sandbox.

#3 Transparent Communication and Workforce Redeployment Strategies

Transparency and constant communication are the crucial ways business leaders can avoid workforce attrition when fearing generative AI. Business leaders need to tell workers what this technology means for them—what jobs will be substituted, what jobs will be augmented, what jobs will be transformed, and what will happen to their jobs. Companies have adjusted hiring practices due to disruptive technologies.

Beyond communication, companies should offer pathways for employees to transition into new, redesigned roles. One of the world’s largest furniture companies is retraining its call center employees to be interior design advisors. AI answers routine customer queries in this scenario, freeing employees to offer special home-improvement services. That way, the company’s strategy with generative AI leverages it for efficiency and improves the value and quality of employee roles.

#4 Funding Security Research for AI

Invest in security research to support the development of robust security solutions for AI. This includes active involvement in industry initiatives, collaboration with academic institutions, and the development of real, workable defenses. Engage and participate.

With a proactive and informed approach, CISOs can successfully navigate the dynamic world of AI and effectively manage the associated risks. Embracing AI as a powerful tool should come with the requirement for safe and ethical implementation. By acquiring knowledge, collaboration, and a commitment to continued improvement, CISOs can and should lead toward a future where AI propels progress without compromising security.

The Chief Artificial Intelligence Officer is another great addition to have in place for managing AI in the workplace. This role is focused on the strategic development and implementation of AI technologies, together with responsible use. They strategically lead the integration of AI technologies into different departments and business units. They can, therefore, align the organization’s AI initiatives with its overall goals and objectives. They develop policies, standards, and guidelines for AI’s ethical and responsible use. They will also ensure collaboration between IT, data science, the business units, and other stakeholders on AI projects to ensure business needs are fulfilled within security and compliance.

#6 Invest in Employee Training and Awareness

Employees are aware of the drawbacks and advantages of generative AI. In a survey by the World Economic Forum, 95% of workers agreed that they should be upskilled over the next five years due to the disruption caused by AI. Most wanted to be upskilled by their employers: 80% of white-collar workers, 76% of blue-collar workers, and 74% of pink-collar workers.

Almost a third of respondents had sought learning opportunities on their own initiative in response to AI disruption; over half thought their company was failing to provide them with training on generative AI.
