Artificial intelligence is rewriting the economics of cybercrime.
Attacks that once required operators, custom tooling and weeks of preparation can now be assembled in minutes. The result is a new threat economy where ransomware groups scale like startups. Faster, cheaper and far more efficient than defenders are used to confronting. Phishing campaigns scale instantly, malware can be generated or modified on demand and impersonation attacks can convincingly replicate voices and faces. AI isnโt replacing cybercriminals, itโs giving them the ability to operate faster, cheaper and at a scale weโve never seen before.
The biggest misconception about AI in cybercrime is that it has replaced human attackers. In reality, the core logic of ransomware and most cyberattacks remains human-directed. What has changed is speed, reach and efficiency. AI is acting as a force multiplier, lowering barriers to entry and accelerating every stage of the attack lifecycle. Securinโs 2025 Ransomware Index Report analysis of 7,061 confirmed victims, across 117 groups, reveals that generative AI is compressing the economics of ransomware by reducing friction across development, access and extortion workflows. The result is an expanding, higher-velocity, higher-volume threat environment.
Recognizing the Signals of AI-Powered Attacks
AI-powered attacks usually show up as speed, scale and personalization that feel unnatural. What used to take days now happens in hours. Phishing emails are no longer poorly written. They are context-aware, grammatically perfect and tailored to the recipient. Deepfakes replicate voices or faces with a convincing level of realism.
For businesses, the signal is often velocity and coordination: multiple login attempts across geographies, rapid exploitation of a newly disclosed vulnerability or credential abuse that spreads laterally in minutes. AI compresses the window from discovery to exploitation, so unusual speed is often the first indicator.
At its core, identity remains the primary target. When credentials, tokens or synthetic identities are being tested at scale, AI is often behind the automation.
Deepfakes and the Rise of AI-Driven Social Engineering
The rise of deepfake-enabled social engineering illustrates how quickly this shift is happening. The ransomware report describes a case in which a finance employee approved a $25 million transfer during a video call that appeared to involve company executives. Every participant in the call, except the victim, was an AI-generated deepfake. The incident demonstrated a structural change in cyber risk. Seeing is no longer believing. Identity itself has become spoofable in real time.
AI Is Lowering the Barrier to Cybercrime
AI is also accelerating attackers’ development and deployment of malware. Historically, building ransomware required deep technical expertise. That barrier is falling quickly. One example documented in the report is the ransomware group FunkSec, which scaled operations despite limited operator skill. Forensic analysis of its malware revealed signs of AI-assisted coding, including polished English comments and rapid iteration in development. AI did not make the group elite. It made them viable. The result is a larger pool of actors capable of launching sophisticated attacks.
Another shift is the automation of extortion operations themselves. Some ransomware groups now deploy AI chatbots within negotiation portals to communicate with victims, verify stolen data and issue payment instructions. These bots can manage hundreds of concurrent extortion conversations, allowing ransomware groups to scale operations without expanding personnel.
At the same time, attackers are moving away from exploiting single vulnerabilities. Modern ransomware campaigns increasingly use exploit chaining. Instead of a single weakness, attackers combine multiple small gaps into what we call toxic combinations. AI accelerates that chaining process and allows attacks to unfold in a coordinated sequence. You may also see rapid weaponization of newly disclosed vulnerabilities. When proof-of-concept exploits appear within hours, that compression often signals AI assistance.

How Defenders Must Adapt
For defenders, the lesson is clear. Prevention alone is no longer enough. Individuals and organizations must assume attackers are using automation and respond with layered defenses and real-time monitoring.
For individuals:
- Use strong, unique passwords.
- Enable multifactor authentication.
- Be skeptical of urgent requests, even if the voice or email appears authentic.
- Remember that deepfakes and AI-generated phishing thrive on emotional triggers and urgency.
For businesses:
- Make identity protection central to operations.
- Continuously monitor for abnormal login behavior.
- Enforce strict privilege management.
- Maintain rapid response processes.
- Validate exploitability and close exposures before attackers chain them together.
The Next Phases of the Cyber Fight
Cybercrime has always evolved alongside technology. AI is simply accelerating that evolution. Attacks are becoming faster, cheaper and easier to scale. But AI also provides defenders with powerful new capabilities to detect, analyze and respond to threats in real time.
The organizations that succeed in this environment will recognize the fundamental shift in identity becoming the primary battleground of cyber risk, and automation being the only way to defend it at scale. In the AI era, the advantage will belong to defenders who can move as fast as their adversaries.
