ITechnology Interview with Amod Bavare, Principal and Global Cloud Migration Leader at Deloitte Consulting, LLP

ITechnology Interview with Amod Bavare, Principal and Global Cloud Migration Leader at Deloitte Consulting, LLP

“A Tremendous Opportunity for Organizations to Use Cloud Analytics and Machine Learning Services to Optimize the Business Infrastructures to Scale to Data and Innovation Needs of the Future.”

Hi Amod, please tell us about your role and the team/technology you handle at Deloitte.

I am a principal in the Cloud Engineering division at Deloitte Consulting LLP. Day to day, I lead Deloitte’s global cloud migration and modernization market efforts across all industries and sectors, drawing on over 25 years of IT industry experience working across complex enterprise applications to the cloud.

How did you arrive at the company? What were the key milestones in your career that helped you scale to this level?

I have a bachelor’s in engineering and a master’s in computer science, so I have always been interested in IT and software. In some of my early roles, I was responsible for software design & development for a Performance Support application suite for the Oil & Gas Industry. From there, I went on to lead an e-commerce software development team for a dot com startup company. That really sparked my interested in cloud migrations, where I’ve spent the last two decades focused on all types of cloud migrations across industries—and especially focused on language and open source.

What is the most contemporary definition of “Cloud migration”?

Cloud migration is any form of moving your data, network, applications or infrastructure to the cloud. Therefore, it can encompass many things. It might involve moving a physical data center to the cloud. It could involve bringing on-premise databases, networking software, applications and infrastructure into the cloud. It might involve rethinking legacy infrastructure and platforms and building new cloud solutions to take aspects of what that technology does into the cloud. There are really any number of possibilities.

What kind of IT and data management infrastructure should a company have to successfully plan a cloud migration?

There’s no single IT requirement or data management infrastructure a company needs to have today in order to successfully plan a cloud migration. The most important thing for data engineers and data scientists to know and understand is what data they have, where it resides, and what workloads it powers. The organization can then take its data workflow maps and use this to understand what pieces of the current infrastructure would be impacted by moving into the cloud and in what way. This will then help to navigate around cloud requirements related to data privacy regulations in a way that brings security-by-design thinking up front into the cloud migration process.

Could you tell us how Deloitte helps its customers with Cloud migration strategies?

Deloitte’s Application Modernization & Migration Consulting team helps organizations move to the cloud with a focus on optimizing scalability and agility, cost optimization, supporting the remote workforce, improving security and reducing risk, and harnessing big data. We support all legacy technologies, including mainframe, midrange, and distributed platforms with a hybrid delivery approach.

How do you see AI ML and Cloud computing platforms scaling from here? How would these computing trends in Data management and security practices evolve with the increased adoption of AI ML applications?

There is a huge opportunity for organizations to enhance their data management, analytics, and machine learning capabilities by moving into the cloud, whether that is bringing data and applications into the cloud, taking advantage of pre-trained models and frameworks being offered by the cloud providers, or using auto ML solutions and services from these vendors.

Deloitte’s research has reported that the current state of the Cloud ML market is estimated to be between US$2-5 billion, with the potential to reach US$13 billion by 2025. Given Deloitte’s Annual State of AI 3rd Edition report found 83% of respondents said that AI will be critical or very important to their organizations’ success within the next two years, there is a tremendous opportunity for organizations to use cloud analytics and machine learning services to optimize their business infrastructures to scale to data and innovation needs of the future.

Your prediction on the “future of IT / ITES Management platforms – how are you planning for the future at Deloitte?,

I’d predict that these solutions will need to become increasingly integrated to be able to manage disparate and distributed data in a dynamic way with the audit trail and security that regulators would need.

Thank you, Amod! That was fun and we hope to see you back on itechnologyseries.com soon.
