HPC and the IT Skills Gap: Hut 8 HPC Shows IT Decision Makers Understand Importance of HPC but Cost Constraints and a Lack of Skilled Staff are Slowing Adoption

90% of survey respondents believe high performance computing is critical, but less than half are implementing the technology

Hut 8 HPC, a high performance computing (HPC) infrastructure provider, announced the results of a survey that explored IT professionals’ views on how emerging technologies, including HPC, will affect data centres in the future. The survey of 1,000 American and Canadian IT decision makers revealed a significant gap between the importance of HPC technology on their business and the level of HPC implementation within their organizations: 90% of those surveyed classified the tech as ‘important’ for their data centre, while fewer than half (42%) said they are currently deploying HPC technology.

HPC uses sophisticated computers that work together to process enormous amounts of data and calculations much faster than on traditional CPU-based platforms. As the need for this sophisticated compute grows, North American IT decision makers understand that HPC is critical to drive innovation in a scalable way across virtually every industry sector. Respondents cited the ability to improve processing speed and performance (48%) and better handling of big data analytics (42%) as the top two benefits expected from incorporating HPC into their technology lineup. With too few IT decision-makers implementing HPC, many businesses are at risk of falling behind with lower enterprise hardware utilization and productivity and sub-standard optimization.

HPC Implementation and the IT Skills Gap

Today’s skills gap may be partly to blame for the discrepancy between the overwhelming value IT professionals place on the importance of HPC and the technology’s low adoption numbers across American and Canadian organizations. Among respondents who have not deployed HPC in their organizations, one-third (32%) stated a lack of technical expertise on staff was the main reason for not capitalizing on the technology. And among all respondents — including those who have implemented HPC — nearly half (46%) cited “a lack of skilled personnel to manage HPC systems” as an anticipated challenge in implementing and managing HPC technology for their business.

Cost Constraints Limiting Adoption

IT decision makers noted that another factor delaying HPC implementation is cost: of those who haven’t deployed HPC technology, 45% said the costs of acquiring and maintaining infrastructure is a challenge. And with supply chain limiting hardware availability, those who have the budget to move ahead with HPC are left waiting up to a year or longer to implement the technology.

“Trends in advanced technologies can be challenging to keep pace with, even for the most savvy IT decision makers, but the benefits that HPC technology can create are substantial. HPC technologies based on GPU platforms such as machine learning, VFX, and AI have the potential to power the digital economy, driving innovation in financial services, healthcare, media, and many more industry sectors,” said James Beer, Senior Vice President of Operations at Hut 8 HPC. “We are here to help in-house IT decision makers stay ahead of trends and bridge the skills gap by leveraging our seasoned, hands-on data centre team members to advise and support in implementing new technology that will drive meaningful results for their business. We also have the hardware and HPC infrastructure that many professionals are struggling to procure on a tight turnaround, and are able to rent out our GPUs on an hourly basis to seamlessly support clients’ HPC needs.”

Hut 8 is an HPC pioneer powering the latest digital evolution. The company offers highly secure data centre infrastructure, cloud GPU offerings, and a skilled team to support enterprise clients.
