Vantage Launches New Solution to Continuously Optimize GitHub Spend

GitHub Costs Support Provides Automated, Comprehensive Cost Data Ingestion and Allocation

Vantage, the leading cloud cost management platform that provides actionable insights for every engineer, today announced the availability of GitHub Costs Support, a new solution that allows businesses to seamlessly manage and optimize GitHub spend. The solution leverages automated data ingestion to extract comprehensive billing insights from GitHub. Businesses can continuously track usage and costs associated with GitHub services, such as GitHub Actions, Shared Storage, and Copilot, including compute costs for self-hosted runners — all from a single platform. This gives businesses deeper visibility into GitHub spend as part of a holistic FinOps approach to multi-cloud cost management.

“Vantage aims to be the first truly cloud-agnostic platform for cost management. As part of this journey, we’re constantly innovating new ways to integrate billing and usage data from historically siloed providers,” said Ben Schaechter, co-founder and CEO of Vantage. “GitHub Costs Support makes it easier than ever for customers to bring their GitHub spend under management alongside their other providers. It’s another important step in helping our customers take the guesswork out of their cloud spend.”

Until now, GitHub’s billing APIs have made it difficult for businesses to achieve sufficient granularity into their spend. Allocating build costs by repository, user, or organization was not possible through the GitHub-provided tooling without manual, time-consuming effort. For example, organizations have struggled to associate which teams, projects, or repositories are using GitHub Actions build minutes. Businesses that use self-hosted runners, including those that run on Kubernetes or on virtual machines, found it difficult to associate these compute costs with their overall GitHub spend. Additionally, many organizations use a combination of GitHub-hosted and self-hosted runners, making it challenging to get a single view of cost drivers. As a result, many businesses do not track their GitHub usage throughout the month, only look at their final monthly bill, and are therefore unable to optimize GitHub spend.

Now, with the launch of Vantage GitHub Costs Support, customers gain access to frequently updated, granular cost data for GitHub Actions, Shared Storage, and Copilot. They can see user, repository, and workflow-level billing for Actions builds. Vantage brings together the data for both GitHub-hosted and self-hosted runners into one single source of truth for GitHub cost data. Additionally, customers with GitHub Enterprise can track the license usage of enterprise members. With these capabilities, any GitHub customer can now achieve a complete, up-to-date view of GitHub costs and use granular data to optimize their spend on an ongoing basis.

“We’re heavy users and fans of GitHub and make extensive use of GitHub runners. In the past we just saw our bill creep up each month but had a hard time identifying what was driving it. Using the new Vantage GitHub integration, we can now see our costs allocated by each repository as well as by individual workflow,” said Nick Van Wiggeren, CTO of PlanetScale. “Having our GitHub costs alongside other services like AWS in Vantage has provided a single pane of glass view that our engineering and finance teams use for the source of truth as a result of this integration.”
