Expanding open source ecosystem makes it easier to create custom Internal Developer Platforms

Nirmata today announced Kyverno, the policy engine designed for Kubernetes, adds support for k0rdent, the first open-source Distributed Container Management Environment (DCME), launched by Mirantis. K0rdent provides a single control plane for cloud-native applications on any infrastructure. Kyverno specifically adds enhanced policy enforcement and governance capabilities within k0rdent, allowing users to define and apply custom policies for security, compliance, and operational best practices across all managed Kubernetes clusters. This enables granular control over resource configurations and workload deployments, ensuring consistency and security at scale.

By managing Kubernetes clusters across any infrastructure, k0rdent simplifies multi-cluster management and enables enterprises to accelerate innovation while enforcing compliance. k0rdent makes it easy for platform engineers to create customized internal developer platforms (IDPs). Kyverno adds security-based guardrails to enable developer self-service.

“Integrating Kyverno with k0rdent empowers users with robust, policy-driven governance across their distributed Kubernetes environments,” said Ritesh Patel, VP Products of Nirmata, the creator of Kyverno”By providing a centralized policy engine that works seamlessly with k0rdent’s multi-cluster management, we enable enterprises to maintain compliance and security while accelerating their cloud-native initiatives by enabling developer self-service. Kyverno’s declarative approach to policy management aligns perfectly with k0rdent’s goal of simplifying Kubernetes operations across diverse infrastructures.”

Kyverno’s policy-as-code approach allows users to define policies using familiar Kubernetes YAML, eliminating the need for complex programming languages. This integration with k0rdent allows users to apply these policies consistently across all clusters managed by k0rdent, ensuring uniform security and compliance posture regardless of the underlying infrastructure. Additionally, Kyverno’s ability to mutate and validate resources at runtime provides real-time enforcement and prevents misconfigurations before they impact production environments, adding significant value to k0rdent users.

k0rdent simplifies maintenance across cloud service providers and on-premises infrastructure with declarative automation, centralized policy enforcement, and production-ready templates optimized for modern workloads. It leverages the open-source Cluster API to deploy Kubernetes clusters anywhere, including AWS, Azure, vSphere, and OpenStack.

“k0rdent gives platform engineers a powerful, Kubernetes-native environment for managing applications across infrastructures while ensuring compliance and driving innovation,” said Randy Bias, vice president of Open Source Strategy and Technology at Mirantis. “Partnering with Nirmata and integrating Kyverno strengthens the k0rdent ecosystem and brings additional value to users of open-source for distributed computing.”

A longtime proponent of open source, and an active contributor to more than 50 open source projects, Mirantis made k0rdent open for public use and welcomes technologists worldwide to join the project. k0rdent is part of a succession of open-source projects recently released by Mirantis, including Rockoon, Blueprint Operator, and Blueprint Controller.
