Microsoft, under the leadership of Azure CTO Mark Russinovich, claims it deploys five of these supercomputers each month, all as powerful as Eagle, which itself reaches 561 petaflops of performance. Eagle, launched in November, when the Top500 ranking was updated, took the bronze medal of the world’s most powerful supercomputer, reaching an impressive 561.2 petaflops performance in tests, cementing Microsoft as the biggest cloud supercomputer provider.

At the Microsoft Build conference, Azure CTO Mark Russinovich explained the technological prowess behind securing Eagle’s position in the Top500 ranking.

“We secured that place with 14,400 networked Nvidia H100 GPUs and 561 petaflops of compute, which at the time represented just a fraction of the ultimate scale of that supercomputer,” Russinovich stated.

He further highlighted the dynamic nature of Azure’s AI system, stating, “Our AI system is now orders of magnitude bigger and changing every day and every hour.” Despite Eagle maintaining its performance in the latest Top500 ranking, Russinovich’s remarks hinted at the broader scope of Azure’s compute capacity.

During the Microsoft Build conference, much of the technological strategy behind securing Eagle’s place in the Top500 ranking was detailed. Now, that deployment comprised 14,400 networked Nvidia H100 GPUs and 561 petaflops of computing, which was only a portion of the supercomputer’s ultimate scale at the time. The focus was also put on the dynamic evolution of Azure’s AI system, which is constantly growing in scale and changing daily and by the hour. Although Eagle held its performance in the new Top500 ranking, the discussion hinted at a larger scope of Azure’s computing.

Scaling AI Development with Orca and Whale-Sized Supercomputers

The subsequent system constructed, in terms of scale, rivaled that of an orca, a reference possibly alluding to the Eagle system, which facilitated the training of GPT-4 in 2022. Although the comparison lacks precision, orcas surpass great white sharks in length and weight, roughly twice and thrice, respectively.

Additionally, the most recent deployment equated to the size of a whale in terms of scale. Expanding on this comparison, a blue whale, the envisioned whale, dwarfs an orca, being over twice its length and approximately 25 times heavier.
