“The relationship between C3 AI and Shell has been productive. We now have more than 10,000 pieces of equipment from tens of Shell assets successfully being monitored on the C3 AI ecosystem, as well as additional enterprise applications being scaled up”

While working with C3 AI, Shell has developed advanced models and application functionalities that anticipate maintenance needs for control valves and critical equipment, while tackling global enterprise data, automation, and usability challenges. Now, C3 AI will integrate this predictive maintenance technology into the C3 AI Reliability application, making it available to other customers and further advance C3 AI Reliability as the industry standard for predictive maintenance.

To realize the most value from AI, C3 AI and Shell are pursuing a roadmap starting with reliability and asset monitoring solutions, focusing on safety, asset integrity, process and production optimization, and sustainability solutions. This collaboration marks a continued commitment of the C3 AI program across Shell.

“The work between the dedicated teams from C3 AI and Shell during our five-year collaboration has created extremely successful AI initiatives deployed across a highly complex environment,” said C3 AI President and CTO Ed Abbo. “This technology transfer strengthens and advances both of our products and goals — it expands on the already deep bench of oil and gas offerings for customers while progressing our combined work to support the global energy transition with digital transformation.”

In this collaboration with C3 AI, Shell will be able to dedicate its engineers and data scientists who have been working on its predictive maintenance technology to emerging applications. The C3 AI Platform is how customers like Shell can build custom applications quickly and easily for company-specific use cases. By taking advantage of the data science and programming tools, engineers can re-use features and machine-learning model components while smoothly collaborating across departments to accelerate AI application deployment.

“The relationship between C3 AI and Shell has been productive. We now have more than 10,000 pieces of equipment from tens of Shell assets successfully being monitored on the C3 AI ecosystem, as well as additional enterprise applications being scaled up,” said Dan Jeavons, Vice President Computational Science and Digital Innovation at Shell. “Working this closely with C3 AI to create robust AI solutions that increase operational efficiency helps to reduce cost and improve reliability.”

In addition, this collaboration will streamline the offerings available within the Open AI Energy Initiative (OAI Energy) marketplace. Founded in early 2021 by C3 AI, Shell, Baker Hughes, and Microsoft, the OAI Energy is an open ecosystem of AI-based solutions for the energy and process industries. Shell’s OAI Energy offerings, including the Shell Predictive Maintenance for Control Valves application, will still be available on the OAI Energy platform for purchase by members.
