Veriff Reveals the Countries Leading the Global Cybersecurity Workforce, With the US, Brazil and Mexico Taking the Top Spots

• The United States has the biggest cybersecurity workforce in the world at 879,000, followed by Brazil, Mexico and the UK  

• 70% of the top 10 cybersecurity companies leading the way in recruitment are based in the United States, 20% are UK-based

• Engineering is the most in-demand job department in cybersecurity, followed by sales and development

Veriff has analysed the global cybersecurity workforce to reveal the top 14 countries paving the way, as well as the companies leading in recruitment and the most in-demand cybersecurity job roles.

Every 39 seconds, there is a new attack somewhere on the web. Following an increase in breaches since the pandemic began, there has been a higher demand for cybersecurity positions, with recruitment up 350% since 2013. With cybercriminals becoming smarter in their attacks, the need for a larger and more powerful cybersecurity workforce subsequently increases, with smarter technology, such as AI-powered identity verification, already helping to combat fraud. 

Veriff has analysed the global workforce, revealing the companies and countries leading the way in cybersecurity. With an upper-end salary of $420,000 (£305,687), cybersecurity can be a competitive field, so Veriff also reveals the most in-demand job titles.

Top 14 countries with the largest cybersecurity workforce 

The US comes out on top as the country with the largest cybersecurity workforce at nearly 900,000 employees, closely followed by Brazil with just over 600,000. Mexico comes in at third having almost half a million cybersecurity employees, yet its malware attacks were more than 23 times this figure in the first half of 2020 alone at 9.9 million. 

When comparing each country’s workforce against its population, the US is demoted to ninth place, with just 0.3% of its population working in cybersecurity. Singapore takes the lead with 1% of its population working within cybersecurity, followed by the UK (0.5%), South Korea (0.5%) and Australia (0.4%).

The top 10 companies leading the way in cybersecurity 

The demand for cybersecurity staff will continue to grow, with predictions of a 31% increase by 2029 – over seven times faster than the national average job growth of 4%. Alongside this, over two-thirds (68%) of business leaders feel that cybersecurity risks are increasing, making the cybersecurity workforce a priority for businesses around the world. 

With an estimated 3.5 million unfilled cybersecurity vacancies in 2021 alone, Veriff wanted to analyse some of the top cybersecurity companies in the world, to find out who is leading the way in cybersecurity recruitment. 

Netskope is the leading company, advertising 566 jobs – despite being one of the second-youngest companies ranking in the top ten. The US leads the way as home to the most cybersecurity companies with the largest number of job openings, making up 70% of the top ten list. The UK follows in second with two companies featuring in the ranking, including Sophos in second and Darktrace in tenth.

The top five most in-demand cybersecurity jobs

Veriff has also analysed the job titles of the top 10 cybersecurity companies to reveal the most in-demand roles. The most in-demand department is engineering, with Senior Software Engineers being the most advertised, making up more than a quarter (26%) of the total job openings. The average salary of a Senior Software Engineer in the UK is £59,000, which differs largely from the US, where the average salary is much higher at $131,000 (equal to £95,000). 

The second most in-demand department in cybersecurity is sales, accounting for one in six (15%) cybersecurity job advertisements – the most popular role within sales being Sales Engineer. Following in third is Development, with the top role being Software Developer.
