Local AI processes documents on the device, works offline and costs Editor and Reader users nothing extra

  • Data security: Document content is handled on the device and isn’t sent to an AI service.

  • Flexibility: Shift between processing locally or on the cloud.

  • Cost savings: Editor and Reader users get Local AI at no extra charge and use no AI credits.

Foxit, a global PDF and document software company, expanded its portfolio’s AI capabilities with Local AI in Foxit PDF Editor and Reader. With Local AI, security-conscious enterprises can use AI on confidential documents without exposing data to third-party AI tools. Organizations benefit from lower token costs when using Local AI to process documents. The AI runs on the user’s own machine allowing them to access confidential files anywhere.

Local AI builds on the Foxit PDF Editor 2026.2 release, which also introduced Foxit Workspace for multi-document insights and content creation. Local AI extends Foxit’s document intelligence capabilities to documents typically blocked by security and compliance policies, enabling teams to work safely with AI on contracts, patient records, and client files.

“Many organizations have documents they can’t upload to the cloud,” said Evan Reiss, SVP Marketing, Foxit. “We’ve expanded AI across our portfolio and give customers control over where it runs. Local AI makes document intelligence accessible even without access to major frontier models, so they can do more with documents.”

Local AI puts security first

Local AI brings AI to documents that can’t be processed in the cloud. Local AI uses Microsoft Foundry Local, which downloads supported models from its catalog and detects the user’s hardware to select a compatible setup. When Local AI processes a document, the document content, chat context, and conversation history are processed on the device and aren’t sent over the internet to an AI service. Performance and model availability depend on the user’s hardware, and a GPU is recommended for the best performance. Internet access is needed for initial setup, model downloads, updates, and other connected features. Learn more about Local AI.

Teams pick where the AI runs for each file with a single setting. Local mode is used on sensitive files. Cloud mode handles all other document intelligence needs. Foxit Local AI supports model selection; users can download their preferred model or multiples and switch between them as needed improving output and productivity.

With these capabilities, organizations can now:

  • Review sensitive legal files without putting confidentiality at risk.
  • Use AI on medical records and keep patient health information private.
  • Process client financial records that security teams keep out of the cloud.
  • Bring document intelligence to air-gapped and disconnected government networks and give agencies the same advantages as connected teams.
