Mixed Reality (MR) is a combination of the virtual world and reality. In other words, they co-exist in a mixed realm where the physical and real objects can interact with each other in real-time. Moreover, its applications are unlimited; from designing and architecture to medical surgery, MR introduces convenience, cost-efficiency, and a whole new experience. You no longer need to rely on hypotheses for visualizing the projects. Plus, you can meet anyone via holoportation, just like the inter-galaxy meeting in the film Avengers: Endgame. Companies can assure qualitative communication in a shared virtual space with life-like self-projections and features that support the 3D demonstration.

Microsoft has been working on the project for years now, with the help of Azure, the company’s cloud computing platform. “The Microsoft Mesh platform will, in the coming months, offer developers a full suite of AI-powered tools for avatars, session management, spatial rendering, synchronization across multiple users, and holoportation to build collaborative solutions in mixed reality”, the company says. Recently, Microsoft’s Ignite hosted a digital conference via holoportation, in which people across the globe presented themselves in the form of virtual 3D avatars. At Ignite, Microsoft launched two apps: the Microsoft Mesh app and a newer version of Mesh-enabled AltspaceVR. The conference also explored the applications and possibilities of the future world, especially in deep-sea exploration and entertainment.
“This has been the dream for mixed reality, the idea from the very beginning,” said Microsoft Technical Fellow Alex Kipman. “You can actually feel like you’re in the same place with someone sharing content. You can teleport from different mixed reality devices and be present with people even when you’re not physically together.” Kipman himself appeared on the virtual stage while narrating the show opening.

OceanX, a nonprofit that merges cutting-edge science with technology experiences to support ocean education and awareness, announced a collaboration with Microsoft Mesh. Furthermore, the collaboration will enable scientists from all over the world to see what the OceanXplorer vehicles are exploring. They’ll be able to gather using HoloLens and point out a particular area in the holographic seafloor. “The idea is to take all this amazing scientific data we’re collecting, bring it into a holographic setting, and use it as a way to guide scientific missions in real-time,” said Vincent Pieribone, vice chairman of OceanX.
Lune Rouge seeks to create new virtual experiences of live performances and festivals. Many times before this, the experience had been disappointing. The Quebec-based initiative founded by Cirque du Soleil’s Laliberté senses a potential to change that. “It would be a nice complement to live entertainment,” said Alexandre Miasnikof, executive director for production at Lune Rouge. “This brings in another layer of human connection. Also, it brings entertainment to people who wouldn’t normally be able to come to an event.”
Additionally, Niantic demonstrated a proof-of-concept Pokémon GO demo experience that runs on HoloLens 2 at the conference.
