OpenCV Launches World’s Largest Spatial AI Competition with sponsors Microsoft Azure and Intel

Over the summer 210 teams worldwide will vie for over $400,000 in prizes around the world.

OpenCV, a world leader in Computer Vision, has announced the OpenCV AI Competition 2021 with the preliminary submission period ending January 27th, 2021. Submissions are now open to teams of 1-4 people (up to 10 for university teams), with prizes being awarded in 6 different regions to encourage global participation.

What is Spatial AI? It’s the capability for Artificial Intelligence (including Machine Learning) to be applied to the physical world – to tell you what an object is and where it is in 3D space – in real time. OpenCV AI Kit with Depth (OAK-D) is OpenCV’s smart camera powered by the power-efficient Intel Myriad X chip that brings near real-time neural inference and depth perception to edge devices.

The competition will consist of two phases: A preliminary phase of open project submissions, followed by the “finals” phase- where selected teams actually build their proposed projects. Globally, 25 general teams and 10 university teams will be selected from each of 6 global regions in the competition for a total of 210, making this the largest Spatial AI competition in the world. The competition features prizes valued at over $400,000.

Thanks to our sponsors Microsoft Azure and Intel, OpenCV will be sending out 1200 OAK-D smart cameras, along with computations credits for model training on the Azure platform, and 3 months of Intel DevCloud. By removing the barriers of hardware and computational cost, the OpenCV AI Competition 2021 is open to more people than ever before.

linkedin.com/in/satyamallick/, CEO of OpenCV.org, says, “Spatial AI literally adds a new dimension to the AI solution space. Every day computational perception becomes closer to human visual perception. OpenCV is leading this Edge AI revolution by putting a state-of-the-art spatial AI device in the hands of developers around the world. We thank Microsoft Azure and Intel for their commitment to the open source community.”

Prem Prakash, Director, Product Marketing, Azure AI at Microsoft said “The global OpenCV AI Competition makes cutting edge hardware and software accessible to anyone who wants to solve a problem using AI. We are pleased to continue our collaboration with OpenCV and look forward to seeing solutions developers build using the OpenCV AI Kit and Microsoft Azure AI technology.”

“This competition was designed to engage developers across the globe in solving some of our most pressing challenges and unleashing their creativity,” said Matthew Formica, Director, Edge AI Developer Platform Marketing, Intel. “We’re excited to see what the next generation of innovators will build with the Intel Movidius VPU and Intel OpenVINO software toolkit.”
